Washington Low Income Housing Alliance Announces New Executive Director

Rachael Myers, outgoing Director of Organizing and Advocacy at Real Change Newspaper, to head statewide housing advocacy organization

Rachael MyersSEATTLE—The Board of Directors of the Washington Low Income Housing Alliance is thrilled to announce the hiring of new Executive Director Rachael Myers, who will be joining the organization on June 9, 2008.

Rachael was selected by the Hiring Committee of the Board after their review of 30 applications from a diverse pool of candidates, such as a former mayor, state and federal legislative staff, a former pastor, and advocacy leaders from many different backgrounds.

"I am so excited about the direction in which Rachael will take the Alliance,” said Walter Zisette, President of the Alliance Board.  “She really is the perfect candidate for the future of our organization, and for housing advocacy.  Rachael is a bridge builder, a talented organizer and a passionate advocate.  I am really looking forward to the future of the Alliance under Rachael's leadership."

Rachael’s work experience over the last 12 years has been concentrated in social justice advocacy, with significant work in program management, coalition advocacy, and successful fundraising through grant writing and donor development.  She holds Bachelor of Arts and Master of Social Work degrees from the University of Washington.

"I believe that we can end homelessness and ensure that every family has the home they need to thrive, but only if we all work together to change the priorities of our government,” said Rachael Myers of her new role.  “As the director of the Alliance I will work with our members, partners and allies to build a broader coalition, to mobilize more communities and to generate more innovative policy solutions than ever before in service of that goal.  The Alliance is a tremendous organization and coalition, and I am excited to play my part."

Outgoing Executive Director Ben Gitenstein is leaving the Alliance as planned to pursue an MBA degree at the University of Washington. “I have loved being a part of this incredible movement. The members of the Alliance, our allies, and our champions in Olympia and DC are truly incredible advocates for the needs of families throughout our state. This community is truly inspiring," says Ben.  He will stay on to assist with the transition; his official date of departure is July 3, 2008.
