Jon & Kelly's Story

In 2012, the new owner of the building where Jon and Kelly Penfold lived started investigating the finances of his tenants. He wanted to look into "who's getting help from what." When he discovered that Jon was using a HOPWA Voucher to help pay their rent, he tried to make them move out, posting no less than four handwritten eviction notices on their door. All this happened despite Jon and Kelly always paying their rent on time. After they pleaded to be able to stay, the landlord forced them to vacate their one-bedroom apartment with a full kitchen and move to a studio with a hotplate. Jon described the full kitchen as very important to maintaining his health. After this forced move and continued harassment from the landlord, Jon and Kelly felt they had no choice but to move.
