Every year, we recognize advocates who have made a difference in the effort to ensure a safe, healthy, affordable home for everyone. Past award recipients have experienced homelessness and raised their voices to make change. Some have been effective lawmakers working tirelessly within the legislature. All have been recognized for their effectiveness, passion, and resolve in building a more powerful movement.

2014 INDIVIDUAL ADVOCATE OF THE YEAR

Ellie Lambert

Image
Ellie went above and beyond this year's Housing and Homelessness Advocacy Day by organizing a large bus from Yakima filled with a mix of volunteers, staff, board members, homeless individuals, and affordable housing residents. They all made a more than four-hour trek to share their stories and advocate for safe, healthy, affordable homes for all. She got her homelessness advocacy start through AmeriCorps VISTA for the Homeless Network of Yakima County. Ellie is currently the Resource Coordinator for Yakima County Human Services, where she continues to develop and hone her skills as an advocate and is now recruiting more advocates from the community, especially those who are or have experienced homelessness. Ellie was also a member of the first cohort of the Emerging Advocates Program this past fall. Ellie stands out among passionate advocates all across Washington State!

2014 ORGANIZATIONAL ADVOCATE OF THE YEAR

YWCA Seattle | King | Snohomish and Firesteel

Image
Image
The YWCA Seattle | King | Snohomish is committed to advocating for the people and families they serve. Advocacy leadership starts with the Board of Directors and Executive Director Sue Sherbrooke and is infused throughout the organization. During this past legislativesession, Advocacy and Policy Director Liz Mills travelled to Olympia to testify in support of eliminating the document recording fee sunset at every single bill hearing. Each time, she brought with her powerful real stories from people whom the YWCA had been able to help, thanks to these funds. These stories helped legislators understand exactly why protecting the surcharge from sunsetting was so important. YWCA’s social media and advocacy project Firesteel consistently tells the housing and homelessness story online utilizing innovative platforms and events like Storify, their Spark Change podcast series, and a photo booth at this year's Housing and Homelessness Advocacy Day. The Housing Alliance is proud to work in partnership with the YWCA Seattle | King | Snohomish and Firesteel in the movement to ensure a safe, healthy, affordable home for everyone in our state.

2014 LAWMAKER OF THE YEAR

Representative David Sawyer (D-29, Pierce County/South Tacoma)

Image
Representative Sawyer just finished his first term in the House of Representatives. He has already become a champion for affordable housing, ending homelessness, and anti-poverty issues. In 2014, he was the prime sponsor of the House version of the Document Recording Fee Bill (House Bill 2368), which passed the full House of Representatives. In support of the final bill’s passage, Representative Sawyer co-authored a bipartisan editorial in The Olympian, stating that preserving homelessness funds “…means the difference between a decent place to stay for tens of thousands of men, women and children, and desperate nights on the streets or in the woods or in some dirty, dangerous corner of our cities or towns.” He also spoke at our press conference and participated in our gong ceremony commemorating homelessness in Washington. Representative Sawyer’s leadership and persistence were key in protecting funds for homelessness services across the state.

2014 HERO FOR HOMES

Senator Jeannie Darneille (D-27, Pierce County/Tacoma)

Image
Senator Darneille is a long-time champion of health and human services, affordable housing and homelessness programs, and anti-poverty issues. She is the lead champion in the state Senate for the Housing & Essential Needs; Aged, Blind & Disabled; and TANF programs. This year, she was the prime sponsor of the initial Document Recording Fee Bill introduced to the Senate (Senate Bill 6313). Senator Darneille participated in our press conference, authored an editorial in the Tacoma News Tribune, and rang the gong during our action for homelessness at the capitol, all critical steps in ensuring passage of the Document Recording Fee Bill. Senator Darneille was a tireless champion who worked hard on passing a final bill out of the Senate just hours before the legislature adjourned. Her leadership was critical to preserving close to $200 million for homelessness services across Washington.

2014 HERO FOR HOMES

Senator David Frockt (D-46, King County/Seattle)

Image
Senator Frockt is a leader in the Senate for affordable housing, tenant rights, homelessness issues, and anti-poverty issues. He was the prime champion for this year’s Fair Tenant Screening Act (Senate Bill 6291). Senator Frockt was also the prime champion for the Homeless Children Education Act (Senate Bill 6074), which was signed into law this year. This bill improves data collection on the educational outcomes of homeless students and provides teachers and staff with improved training to help them identify and serve homeless students. Senator Frockt spoke at Housing and Homelessness Advocacy Day and rang the gong during our ceremony in support of the Document Recording Fee Bill. Senator Frockt is a leader in his caucus and a passionate, effective champion for people who are struggling to meet their basic needs.

Because 30,069 homeless children and 3,117 people surviving outside is too many…
